35 Years of Fringing - Fun for the Whole Family

July 1st, 2016

At Fringe Theatre Adventures we believe you are never too young to Fringe!  Fringing is for everyone. Your grandma, your eccentric nephew, your kindergarten teacher, your boss, your mailman… even your toddler!

Throughout the 10 days of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, your family can explore the magic of live theatre through our free KidsFringe activities. At KidsFringe everyone can indulge in your sense of play through interactive opportunities, such as learning street performance skills.

Designed for families with toddlers to teenagers, KidsFringe inspires creativity and self-expression. Whether you are an “outtie” - preferring outdoor site activities such as face painting and hula-hooping - or if you’re an “innie” - preferring to attend one of ten indoor Theatre for Young Audiences shows, there is a place for everyone at the Fringe Festival.

But, perhaps the most impressive aspect of KidsFringe is that it’s fueled by the talent of local youth! Every year Fringe Theatre Adventures recruits teenagers who have a passion for storytelling, performance, and like to work with kids. Participants from around the greater Edmonton area audition to become a KidsFringe Youth Troupe member.

May through August professional artists lead the troupe through a wide variety of workshops. Together, they learn how to become an ensemble, develop leadership skills, and learn performance techniques.

Having developed their skills, troupe members produce three interactive plays to perform at KidsFringe. Members take on the key roles of playwright, actor, and director – designing and creating everything from script to set, costumes, and props!

And, when they’re not on stage performing, the Youth Troupe leads other key aspects of KidsFringe. From helping kids use their interactive passport to get around the site to helping a story come to life in the Book Nook, troupe members dedicate their summer to providing an experience like no other for you and your family!

In the last ten years over 100 teenagers have participated in the program. Past participants have gone on to graduate from some of the top theatre schools in this country - and have continued their success sharing the magic of theatre in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and New York. Other alumni have gone on to become professional educators, musicians, and stand-up comedians.

Thanks to the hard work of the Youth Troupe, as well as the many artists and community partners, we will be celebrating our 35th year of fringing this August.

We look forward to seeing you on site getting swept up in the unique, evolving Edmonton experience of fringing. And, although fringing is contagious, it’s highly recommended by some doctors we know.

So, come catch the bug and find your family’s fringe, August 11 – 21, 2016.

Forever Fringing,

Murray Utas
