All Under the Dome

January 3rd, 2017

By Maureen Connellan

Oh the weather outside can be frightful! It’s January and so many of us find ourselves planning children’s parties in the cold and unpredictable days of winter, which seemingly stretch into April or May. Edmonton families know how important it is to have an array of indoor birthday venue options and fortunately our city has a bounty of both indoor playgrounds and recreational facilities. One of these mainstay buildings in Edmonton, the Edmonton Sportsdome, shouldn’t be overlooked in the planning stage.

Once upon a time, the giant blue and white bubble visible from Gateway Boulevard housed an indoor golf range, aptly named the Golf Dome. Like many businesses, the life cycle of the indoor golf facility came to an end and the dome evolved to encompass many new entities. The 60,000 square foot air-suspended dome now encloses two NHL-sized, concrete surfaced hockey rinks along with eight dressing rooms with showers, and two referee rooms. This space is home to both adult and children's’ ball hockey leagues, the SDBHL (Sportsdome Ball Hockey League) and the SDMBHL (Sportsdome Minor Ball Hockey League). In addition, the Edmonton Sportsdome also houses the Fun Dome, an indoor children’s playground with an 18 hole mini golf course, Spikes restaurant & lounge, and a banquet facility, The Celtic Hall.

What does this mean for your party considerations? There are many options! Unlike other venues where the play space is shared with multiple parties, families can enjoy exclusive use of inflatable jumping castles and slides, 18 hole mini golf, projection games, giant imagination blocks, ride on cars and much more at the Fun Dome. Several food packages are available with healthy add-ins including fruit and vegetable platters, and the meals are hosted in a semi-private area within the licensed restaurant. Options to bring in face-painting services or magic shows to enhance the fun experience for all of the guests can be arranged as well. For those planning a party with an extensive guest list, the meal can also be held in the Celtic Hall. This banquet facility, which can accommodate up to 200 people, boasts soaring vaulted ceilings, exposed wood beams, extensive large windows and medieval decor, and is an ideal setting for weddings, corporate events, and celebrations.

For the hockey enthusiast, the dome also offers a way to burn off extra energy with ball hockey parties. Ball hockey is the fastest growing sport in Canada and teaches the game of hockey without the need to skate. The birthday team is all set for fast action fun with one hour on the cement surface rink, along with a dozen hockey sticks, balls and two sets of goalie gear. Similar to the Fun dome parties, packages include meal options with healthy add-ins and are held in semi-private meal area of the licensed restaurant. Best of all, new pricing for all party packages offered at the Edmonton Sportsdome will work with every budget, making it’s a great opportunity to contact the dome for more info and availability!
