Some Other Solutions (SOS) Society for Crisis Prevention Launches the 2016 Summer Rec Program

June 29th, 2016

This summer there are Some Other Solutions for Fort Murray’s Young People.

“Now more than ever children and youth in Fort McMurray will benefit from being with their peers, recreational programs and in mentorship relationships - all essential in the recovery and resilience building process,” says SOS Child & Youth Program Manager TJ Carabeo. As young people return to their community, additional support and programming will assist children in coping with the evacuation and return home.

SOS Summer Rec Program (SRP) is a day camp for all kids aged 6 (by August 31st, 2016) to 11, and for Junior Mentors aged 12 to 16. Youth aged 12 to 16 may apply to become a Junior Mentor, which allows them to gain volunteer experience and more responsibilities.

Junior Mentor training will be ongoing this summer. This training period will educate the Junior Mentors on the qualities of being an effective mentor, how to be respectful to the boundaries of others, and how to take action as a leader.
SOS is committed to providing a safe, fun, and wholesome environment for Fort McMurray’s children. The focus of SRP is to learn and teach each other how to treat one another with utmost respect. We encourage all participants (staff and campers) to grow in this learning and to share each other’s experiences, no matter their religion, race, culture, and creed. We strive to achieve a summer of creativity and making friends, and to foster in every child a sense of self-worth and high self-esteem.

The SRP commences July 5 through August 19, 2016. More information can be found at www.someothersolutions.ca and by emailing summercamp@someothersolutions.ca
