SkirtsAfire herArts Festival hosts Words Unzipped: Black Girl Magic, March 10, 7:30 pm at the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts Gallery (9225 118 Ave).

Curated by Edmonton’s Youth Poet Laureate Nasra Adem, Words Unzipped showcases new collaborations between some of Edmonton’s best spoken word poets and performance artists. With unique collaborations coming together, viewers can expect to be moved, shaken, and delighted. Black Girl Magic is a night for joy. For celebration. For purpose, for love, for justice and rage and storytelling. Black Girl Magic reminds us of the names of our mothers; May we never forget to honour their struggle for it is our birthplace and first home. Black Girl Magic speaks to you with the whole body; voice, feet and word. The interdisciplinary nature of this show reflects the flexibility and openness that Black women navigate from daily. Come be water with us. Words Unzipped: Black Girl Magic features Shima Robinson (spoken word poet), Mpoe Mogale (dancer), Lyndah Bulimo (vocalist / poet), Medgine Mathurin (spoken word poet), Reakash Walters (vocalist) and Ashanti “Karimah” Marshall (musician / vocalist).

SkirtsAfire herArts Festival is heating up March 9 - 12th, 2017, featuring the work of women in theatre, music, dance, visual art, comedy and spoken word in various venues along 118th Avenue. Artists and audience come together to share in these powerful, moving, insightful and entertaining performances, exhibitions and workshops. SkirtsAfire herArts Festival is Edmonton’s only multidisciplinary festival celebrating and elevating the work of women in the arts.
