April 18th, 20161 Comment

50th anniversary season showcases the world premiere of a brand new portrait ballet, five Canadian premieres and incredible guest performances. The coming season also includes favourite Alberta Ballet repertoire and an exciting collaboration with the National Arts Centre.

For Immediate Release: April 18, 2016

Calgary & Edmonton, AB – Alberta Ballet is proud to announce its milestone 50th season, celebrating the unique story of Alberta and bringing the very best in dance to the stage. In the 2016-2017 season Alberta Ballet will present Our Canada – the world premiere of a brand new portrait ballet by Jean Grand-Maître set to the music of Gordon Lightfoot – Canada’s quintessential folk and country music legend.

The 50th season will see the return of Ben Stevenson as he sets the company premiere of Dracula, and will also feature other Canadian premieres including Shadowland by Pilobolus Dance Theatre featuring astounding projected images and acrobatic dance choreography, and Life by BalletBoyz – highlighting the male dance stars of Europe.

Back by popular demand is a much anticipated new performance by Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Edmund Stripe’s family fantasy Alice in Wonderland, and the beloved holiday classic The Nutcracker featuring the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

“For five decades, we’ve been a cultural ambassador – one that has inspired an audience that appreciates the great beauty of ballet, and the sense of community they experience every time they take their seat. Together, we’ve created a momentum that begins on stage and stays with us long after,” says Jean Grand-Maître, Artistic Director.

Touring

Next season The Nutcracker will tour to Ottawa, and in April 2017 Alberta Ballet dancers will travel to the National Arts Centre for the world premiere of the NAC Dance Department's groundbreaking commission celebrating Canada's 150th birthday.

ENCOUNT3RS/RENCONTR3S will feature choreography by Jean Grand-Maître and a new score by Alberta native and rising music star Andrew Staniland. This new composition will be premiered by a full complement of the internationally acclaimed National Arts Centre Orchestra. It will also feature projected scenery by twice Oscar nominated filmmakers Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, also from Alberta.
