JONI MITCHELL WINS 9th GRAMMY FOR LOVE HAS MANY FACES: A QUARTET, A BALLET, WAITING TO BE DANCED – AN ALBUM DEDICATED TO ALBERTA BALLET

February 19th, 2016

Famed singer-songwriter and Alberta Ballet collaborator Joni Mitchell has won her 9th Grammy this weekend, in the category of best album notes for an album she dedicated to Alberta Ballet. The album reflects the ballet Love Has Many Faces, originally set to premiere in the 2013-2014 season, which would have made it the latest portrait ballet by Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maître. The ballet was postponed to allow for further collaboration between Grand-Maître and Mitchell.
Mitchell was the first artist to collaborate with Grand-Maître with the acclaimed ballet The Fiddle and the Drum, which premiered in 2007. The success of this partnership launched a portrait ballet series where Grand-Maître went on to work with artists such as Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang, and Sir Elton John – whose music is set to the spectacular Love Lies Bleeding, closing out Alberta Ballet’s current season this May.
“10 years later, I realize just how blessed I was to have the privilege of collaborating with the profoundly inspiring Joni Mitchell. But it was much more than collaboration; it was a profound mentorship that elevated my creative process and changed my view of life. Although our second ballet Love Has Many Faces has yet to be danced, I am proud of Joni,” says Grand-Maître. “This Grammy is the result of our intense brainstorming sessions on a theme the world needs to reflect upon, especially today. Without Joni’s involvement, the portrait ballets with Sarah, k.d. and Sir Elton never would have been.”
Performances of Love Lies Bleeding run in Calgary May 5-7, and in Edmonton May 13-14. Tickets for shows in both Calgary and Edmonton start at $29 and are available by phone in Calgary at 403-245- 4549, in Edmonton at 780-428-6839 or online at ticket.albertaballet.com.
