Spring Into Making A Difference

April 20th, 2016

At Some Other Solutions Society for Crisis Prevention (SOS), volunteers provide people in crisis with some other solutions for their situation.

April 10-16 was National Volunteer Week celebrating Canada’s 12.7 million volunteers. Volunteers play an integral role in the Wood Buffalo region, and at SOS.  Madeline Austen, Information and Referral Manager stated that “in 2015, the SOS Crisis Line had 868 calls.  Providing this level of support and connecting callers to resources would not have been possible without our committed volunteer listeners.”  Because SOS is accessible through the Crisis Line 24 hours a day, the organization depends on volunteers to be there for people in need.  Whether callers are seeking resources to deal effectively with life challenges, or whether someone is thinking of suicide – knowing other people care can bring individuals hope, healing and wellbeing.

Volunteering can make a difference in the lives of the volunteers as well as those receiving support.  5 Reasons to Volunteer:

  1. Volunteering can provide valuable training, life experience and skill development which is transferrable in the workplace.
  2. Volunteering connects people. This is a great way for newcomers to be a part of the organization’s community and meet new people.
  3. Volunteering strengthens the community, and impacts the lives of those receiving services through volunteers.
  4. Volunteering can enhance self-esteem and confidence.
  5. Volunteering provides you the opportunity to make a difference.

Some Other Solutions Society for Crisis Prevention is currently inviting interested community members to join the SOS volunteer listener team and be part of making a difference in our region. Volunteers receive an extensive orientation and training program and ongoing mentoring and support.  There are also ongoing opportunities to volunteer for SOS events.  Community members interested in learning more about SOS and the volunteer opportunities may contact Madeline Austen, Information and Referral Manager at 780-743-8605.
