March 15th, 2017

With a jam-packed weekend of multi-disciplinary art events, exhibits, performances and competitions, SkirtsAfire herArts Festival has concluded its 5th year celebrating and elevating the work of women in the arts.

The festival included a 10-day run of the world premiere of The Mommy Monologues, SkirtsAfire’s first commissioned production written, produced and featuring local women. Other highlights included the Skirt Design Competition, Words Unzipped: Black Girl Magic curated by Nasra Adem, The A-Line Variety Show, The Key of She featuring six singer-songwriters and an incredible visual art exhibit: In/Hospitable Women curated by Mary Joyce and featuring 7 local artists.

SkirtsAfire is thrilled to announce record-breaking attendance with over 1400 people in attendance. The festival would like to send a thank you to the dedicated volunteers, the incredible SkirtsAfire staff and 2017 Honorary Skirt, Linda Duncan

A huge thank you to all the festival donors and sponsors, without whom the festival could not run. SkirtsAfire would like to especially acknowledge the title sponsor Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited. Finally, thank you to the Alberta Avenue community, media and everyone that came out to the festival, making 2017 a great success.

SkirtsAfire herArts Festival features the work of women in theatre, music, dance, visual art, comedy and spoken word in various venues along 118th Avenue. Artists and audience come together to share in these powerful, moving, insightful and entertaining performances, exhibitions and workshops. SkirtsAfire herArts Festival is Edmonton’s only multidisciplinary festival celebrating and elevating the work of women in the arts.
