Winter Heats Up in Preparation for the 5th Annual SkirtsAfire herArts Festival March 9-12, 2017

SkirtsAfire herArts Festival is heating up winter as they prepare for the 5th annual festival, March 9 – 12, 2017. SkirtsAfire herArts Festival features the work of women in theatre, music, dance, visual art, comedy and spoken word in various venues along 118th Avenue. Artists and audience come together to share in these powerful, moving, insightful and entertaining performances, exhibitions and workshops. 

The Mommy Monologues – A World Premiere
This year the Festival is proud to present the world premiere of The Mommy Monologues as their mainstage production, beginning a 10-day run prior to the festival from March 2 – 12, 2017. The Mommy Monologues breaks the stereotype of mothers and examines ordinary people in extraordinary situations; motherhood in all its joy, judgement, fear, risk and love. 

Directed by Glenda Stirling and featuring Coralie Cairns, Mary Hulbert and Chantelle Han, The Mommy Monologues is written by Beth Graham, Andrea House, Katherine Koller, Annette Loiselle, Conni Massing, Nicole Moeller, Mieko Ouchi, Dana Rayment, Glenda Stirling, Michele Vance Hehir and Cat Walsh. The production also features dramaturg by Tracy Carroll, production design by Tessa Stamp and Sound design by Paul Morgan Donald.

Tickets for The Mommy Monologues prior to the official Festival dates are $22 regular, $17

students /seniors and available at Tix on the Square. Entry during the Festival is Pay-What-You-Can. 

The Peep Show – Winners Announced!
Receiving more submissions than any other year, SkirtsAfire herArts Festival is also pleased to announce the winning playwrights for The Peep Show. 

Category 1- previously unproduced plays

#1 selection - Matara by Conni Massing

Runner-up- This is My Brain on Hockey by Julie McKenzie

Category 2 - previously produced plays

#1 selection Unsuspicious by Maria Colonescu

Runner-up Without You by Nicole Moeller

The #1 selected playwrights each receive $250 and three days of workshopping including a public reading at SkirtsAfire. Runner-up playwrights receive a half-day workshop with actors and a director. Congratulations to all who submitted.

A reading of Matara by Conni Massing will take place on Saturday, March 11 at 7:30 PM, featuring Lora Brovold, Liana Shannon, and Malcolm Azania and Unsuspicious by Maria Colonescu on Sunday, March 12 at 3 PM, featuring Liana Shannon, April Banigan and Twilla McLeod. Both readings will take place in the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts (9225-118 Ave).

Skirt Design Competition – Finalists Announced!
SkirtsAfire herArts Festival is excited to announce the six talented finalists that have been chosen to compete in the annual Skirt Design Competition. The winning skirt will be crowned at the Media Launch on February 27, 2017. All six spectacular designs will be on display in the Cabaret Theatre in the Alberta Avenue Community League (9210 118 Ave) during events throughout the festival. This year’s theme, ‘A Skirt From Her Closet’, challenged designers to create a wearable skirt made of found and upcycled materials only. The winning designers are: Kim Neeser, Andrew Stanczyk, Joanne Ngo, Seo Yeong Yang, Jane Kline (last year’s winner) and Katie Martin.
