What Teens Can Do To Keep Busy This Summer

by Bronwyn Hartman - Edmonton Public Library

1. Make something great: Our Makerspace has everything teens need for their next creation, including 3D printers, sound booths, a vinyl cutter and more. Encourage teens to drop by the library and get creative!

2. Find the next great read: Teens can check out our Staff Picks, talk to staff for recommendations, access eBooks and magazines through our digital collection, or just come and browse our teen section. They can also participate in one of our Summer Starts Here events happening at branches throughout the city.

3. Get in the game: Teens have a love for gaming and can join us for our many gaming programs: Minecraft, retro gaming and even old-school board games!

4. Learn something new: Our non-fiction collection and online resources have everything teens need to learn something new - from a new language, to photo editing, to digital design and more.

5. Come and hang out: On hot summer days the library is an even a cooler place to hang out! With study spaces, meeting rooms, computers and more, teens can come and lounge in an air conditioned space with us at any of our branches.

Exciting Summer Science Camps at TWOSE!

March 1st, 2017

Submitted by TELUS World of Science Edmonton

There might still be a chill in the air and snow on the ground, but at the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton (TWOSE) we understand that as parents you’re looking ahead to those summer months and asking yourselves: how am I going to keep the kids entertained and engaged while they are out of school?

It can be difficult to find that perfect balance between summer programs that are both fun, and educational. It’s important for children to continue a daily journey of discovery and exploration, even when they’re not in the classroom. Luckily, that valuable journey doesn’t have to be a struggle.

At TWOSE, our educators have developed a variety of hands-on and interactive Summer Science Camps for children ages 4-13, beginning July 4 through August 25, 2017, with a focus on teaching valuable Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic concepts. From dinosaurs to robots, TWOSE Summer Science Camps have something to get every child’s neurons firing!

“Our goal as science centre educators is to find new and exciting ways for children to learn through play,” said Andrea Brickwood, Manager of School Programs at TWOSE. “We know we’ve hosted a successful camp when the campers finish off the summer having designed, created, or built something awesome with their own hands and imaginations.”

Summer Science Camps are available in half days (morning and afternoon) as well as full days. There is also pre and post-care available for busy parents who might benefit from earlier drop-off and later pick-up times. And don’t forget: TWOSE Members receive 10 percent off the cost of camps.

Camp themes range from astronomy and space exploration, to programming robots and designing video games, to experimenting with stop-motion animation and building and launching rockets, to conducting chemistry, biology and physics experiments and so much more!

“Each camp is designed to keep the campers interacting with each other, as well as their individual projects,” explained Brickwood. “The campers get so caught up working as a group, or on their own, that they are having far too much fun to even realize how much they are learning every day.”

Registration for Summer Science Camps is now open. For more information visit, or call the Bookings Office at 780-451-3344.
