A Chat with Dunvegan Garden’s Brad Friesen

March 1st, 2015

For 62 years Dunvegan Gardens has been in the business of of putting down roots. With garden centres, greenhouses, tree nurseries, market gardens, gift shops and landscapers, the Friesen family has made it their business to beautify the region.

Brad Friesen recently took some time to tell us a little bit more about what they do.

1. Tell us a little about how Dunvegan Gardens is a family business.

Dunvegan Gardens is a family owned and operated business operating since 1953. Our family moved to the region in the fall of 1952, and quickly got used to the hard work and long hours that were needed in order to plant, water, fertilize, hoe and harvest our vegetable crops successfully. Eventually my two brothers and I began purchasing greenhouses and putting what we learned into our businesses, and we’ve been doing this ever since.

2. What kind of family-oriented community events do you do?

We do an Easter egg hunt, corn maze, corn roast and have Santa Claus at Christmas time. We also host weddings and birthday parties. Fort McMurray has so many wonderful families, and we always have such a great time hosting events full of fun!

3. How do you have back to the community, and why is that important to you?

We help to beautify the city through work projects and donations to local charities. Dunvegan Gardens as a family likes to give back to the community that supports us. We feel that this is very important.

4. Tell us a bit about your donations of fresh food for the Food Bank.

The Food Bank is our top charity. We feel that it is always in need of fresh produce and we grow plenty. The Food Bank relies on the generosity of this community, and donating fresh food is a way for us to help out.

5. Why do you feel Fort McMurray is a great place for families?

Fort McMurray is a thriving community with a strong group of seniors who have pioneered the area. With more and more families calling Fort McMurray home, obviously we’re not the only ones who feel this way!
