Scotiabank MI Summer Camps Pump Up the Summer Fun This Year at MacDonald Island Park

July 1st, 2016

By Theresa Wells

Every year MacDonald Island Park comes alive during the summer months with the sights and sounds of local children enjoying summer camp, and 2016 is no different in this regard as MI Summer Camps return for another year of fun!

Beginning on June 20, MacDonald Island Park will welcome the Scotiabank MI Summer Camps. A new partnership with Scotiabank means that this year camps will be free of charge to local children and youth, allowing them to enjoy camp as their parents and caregivers focus on returning their lives to normal as quickly as possible following the devastating wildfire the region experienced in May, 2016.

“The generosity of Scotiabank is truly incredible,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, operators of MacDonald Island Park. “The residents of our region have been through a very difficult period this spring during the wildfire and mandatory community wide evacuation, and we recognize that families and children in particular were deeply impacted. Allowing local children to participate in summer camp means they will have the chance to not only learn new skills and make new friends, but regain some sense of normalcy as they enjoy everything from sports to interactive games and crafts activities.”

“We want to show our appreciation of our customers and the community by teaming up with RRC to give children the opportunity to have fun, learn new activities and enjoy being kids,” said Laurie Stang, Scotiabank Regional Senior Vice President, Prairie Region. “We are excited to be able to support the community of Fort McMurray by sending kids to Scotiabank MI Summer Camps.”

Scotiabank MI Summer Camps are available for preschoolers from ages 3-6, as well as for youth ages 6-12. The preschooler camps focus on fun, creativity and play while the MI Summer Sports Camp for youth ages 6-12 focus on those activities in addition to learning new sport skills.

Camps operate on a weekly basis, providing participants the chance to develop relationships with their peers and to explore all MacDonald Island Park has to offer, including the Syncrude Aquatic Centre, Rock Climbing Wall and more. In addition to enjoying the amenities and participating in games and crafts, campers will also have the opportunity to try out new sports such as golf, team sports and a variety of other fun sport options. Campers will also be provided with backpacks, swim towels, t-shirts and healthy lunches, proudly supported by Scotiabank.

Scotiabank MI Summer Camps will run from June 20-September 2 and are available for registration in two sessions. Camps in session one, which runs from June 20-July 29, will be available for registration beginning June 13 online at, in person at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and/or by telephone at 780-791-0070. Camps in session two, which runs from August 2-September 2, will be available for registration beginning on July 18 online at, in person at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and/or by telephone at 780-791-0070.

Antoniak says: “This spring might have gotten off to an unusual beginning, but as we look to resume normal operations at MacDonald Island Park we are so excited to welcome our littlest community residents back to the Island to enjoy camp this summer!”
