Summer Camps at MacDonald Island

April 28th, 2014

As the days begin to lengthen, the grass gradually begins to turn green and thoughts turn to the warm and hazy days of summer a mild panic creeps into the minds of many parents. It is the potential of hearing the two words that strike fear into every parent’s heart: “I’m bored.”

Summer, that long awaited season, can be the most wonderful time of the year, especially when children have the opportunity to spend some time learning a new skill, exploring some new activities and bonding with their peers. All those things and more can be accomplished at the Mi Summer Camps at MacDonald Island.

The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) offers a full slate of summer camps tailored to the needs and interests of every child. From golf to art to aquatics, summer camps are designed to be both fun and educational, providing children with the chance to enjoy themselves while trying out new sports and activities and making new friends.

“What is great about summer camp is the chance for children to try something they might not have tried previously,” says Jodie Mercier, Director of Sport and Recreation of the RRC. “The camps we offer allow children to try out sports and activities and explore their interests, and can act as ‘trial run’ as parents look at longer term commitments to those activities. For those children who have tried these sports or activities before, the camps can act as a place to refine skills and develop new relationships with their peers.”

The summer camps offer options for every age range and interest, from preschoolers to young adults. Taking advantage of the many amenities at MacDonald Island, from the Syncrude Aquatic Centre to the Miskanaw Golf Course and many more, the Mi Sport Camps provide children with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports and activities in a safe and encouraging environment and under the supervision of ONE Team professional staff. The Mi Dance Camps and Junior Golf Camps offer specific interest based programming, allowing children to explore dance and golf more thoroughly and under the instruction of dance and golf professionals who are committed to youth development and sharing their passion for their area of expertise.

“Every year during the summer the halls of the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and the greens of the Miskanaw Golf Course come alive with the sounds of laughter as the campers return for another season of fun and recreation,” says Mercier. “We have many campers who return every year simply because they enjoyed camp so much the previous year, but we also welcome new campers annually who are excited to explore the many options we offer for sport and recreation. Boredom isn’t even a possibility with summer camp at MacDonald Island!”
