Ready... Set... Go!

June 26th, 2013

Tis the season!

No, I don’t mean the Holiday Season… or even Allergy Season (although it certainly is that) – it’s Summer Reading Season! This
year, our theme is, GO! Time to pull on your shorts, grab your shades, and head on over to your Fort McMurray Public Library for 6 WEEKS of fun, play, crafts and all around general wonderfulness!

Every summer, your Library offers a Summer Reading Incentive Program for children ages 6-12, to give kids the opportunity to maintain – or even improve – their reading skills over the summer by stimulating their interest in books and reading. We use a creative approach that offers both recreation and a structured environment for reading, and rewards their achievements. (Bribery – it works wonders!)

Here’s the plan (and It. Is. AWESOME):

• The Summer Reading Incentive Program runs from July 2 through August 14. We will run programs in Fort McMurray, Fort Chipewyan, Fort McKay and Janvier.

• During the program, all of the participants will be able to contribute to our very own graphic novel (COOL, huh?) Each participant will receive a printed copy of the graphic novel they helped create at the final party on August 14!

• Every day, there’s something WAY cool going on!

  1. o Mondays through Thursdays, there’s a craft from 1:00-2:00 PM (maximum of 40 kids, first come first served!), and then  Reading Buddies – including French Immersion time – from 2:00-3:00 (the more the merrier!) You must pre-register for the craft, which is $2.00, to cover some supplies. Registration begins June 13 at the Children’s Help Desk.
  2. o FRIDAYS – oh, what we have planned for Fridays! How about a Beach Party at Gregoire Lake? A Pool Party at MacDonald Island? Mad Science Day, Pizza Picnic Day, Drama Day,Water Park Day at Howard Pew Park…EVERY Friday is something extra special! Activity Days also require preregistration, and cost only a Toonie as well!

• Every week, we will draw for a prize. Things like books, games, toys and candy. Remember – the theme is… GO! Active toys will be strongly encouraged!

• We will also draw for Fantabulous Grand Prizes at the Final Party. There will be a prize for each age group, 6-7, 8-10, and 11-2. The winner is the kid who read the most over the 6 weeks of the program!

We here at the Library are SO excited about this summer – come see us and join the party! By the way – Summer Reading is sponsored nationally by TD and locally by the Fort McKay Group of Companies with supporting sponsorship from Rock 97.9 and Country 93.3. Next time you see them, thank them for us – and let them know how fabulous they are for sponsoring kids to read!

Carolyn Goolsby is the Director of the Fort McMurray Public Library. She has been a librarian for nearly 20 years, and thinks it’s the best job in the world. Her mission is to make the Library the funnest, coolest place in Fort McMurray, for both staff and cardholders. Come visit us at our MacDonald Island location, or on our website at www.fmpl.ca
