August 28th, 2014

Submitted by the Fort McMurray International Airport Authority

The new Fort McMurray International Airport is open and offers a variety of exciting features and experiences for the community to explore. As much as the terminal has been designed to deliver an exceptional travel experience and to better accommodate the some 1.2 million passengers moving through it annually, it was also designed to attract more visitors to the airport from the local community.  Here is quick list of what there is to see and do at YMM!

Art Program

Families can enjoy exploring the new terminal and viewing various custom art displays. The custom art installations at YMM include:

  • Sky Explorer, by Lucas Seaward – Located 3rd Floor Board Room

  • Daedalist, by David Robinson – Suspended art in visible from arrivals and departures.

  • Water Ways, Sensing Connection by Liz Ingram - Located on glass, 2nd floor (post security)

  • Northern Lights Wall– Steel light display visible from arrivals and departures.

  • Mounted CT-114 Tutor aircraft – The Snowbird aircraft is an iconic Canadian aviation symbol and is mounted on the roundabout en-route to the terminal. It commemorates not only the opening of the new building and the roadway leading to the terminal, Snowbird Way but is also a tribute to the Canadian Air Force Snowbird pilots.

Observation Deck

Aviation enthusiasts of all ages can satisfy the delight of watching aircraft land and take off at the airport by visiting the public observation area on the 3rd floor of the terminal. This area will be developed over the course of fall 2014 to showcase the history of aviation in Fort McMurray and Northern Alberta. It will also feature interactive displays and telescopes for viewing planes!

Shopping and Dining

There are more shopping and dining options than ever before. Concessions available on the public side include; a food court featuring Burger King, Subway, and Mary Brown’s Chicken and Taters and a Tim Horton’s set to open this fall. We also have a brand new restaurant in Fort McMurray! Whether it’s to dine-in or take-out, Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria is your destination for great tasting pizza and more. We haven't forgotten our shoppers as more retail options have opened including local company Chocolates and Candlelights, Elements Skincare and Nicholby’s Convenience. **Ask airport staff about Shop, Dine, and Dash on Parking promotion.

Enjoy the great outdoors at the airport courtyard. This beautifully manicured courtyard is the perfect place to perch and it is located near the baggage belts in the arrivals hall.
