#FamilyFriendly Time at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG)

January 1st, 2016

Living in Central Alberta comes with many advantages. From a trail system and green spaces that are second to none, to a bonanza of sports and recreation opportunities, there are no shortages of ways to spend your days!

But, living in Central Alberta also means winter. Some days are too cold for even the heartiest of homesteaders. That’s where the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery comes in. Your museum + art gallery invites you to bring your kids for some hands on adventures year-round!

Introducing Mini MAG!

Mini MAG is designed for kids 5 and under.  It gives the youngest artists in the community a chance to come and create a new piece of art every week.  All of our projects are geared towards kids under 5 and are easily adapted to the different skills and abilities of all kids.  This new drop in program runs every Wednesday morning from 9:30 – 11 am.

WHEN: Wednesday mornings, Drop-In 9:30-11am

COST to create your own piece of art is $2/child for those with family memberships and $3/child for those without a family membership.

DIY: Try at home one of our past Mini MAG activities!

Toilet Paper Monsters

Make your very own monster from toilet paper rolls.  They can be as spooky or cute as you want.

Materials Needed:

Any cardboard tube – toilet paper, paper towel, wrapping paper

Coloured or patterned paper

Sticky back foam

Googly eyes

  1.   If desired, cut the paper tube to the desired height of the monster.
  2.   The paper tube can be painted or wrapped in coloured or patterned paper.
  3.   Once the tube is finished/dried, it’s time to decorate and create your monster features.
  4.   The sticky back foam can be cut into any desired shape.  In addition, coloured paper can be cut to create different features – hair, arms, teeth, etc.
  5.   Be creative with the features of your monsters.
  6.   The final touch will be the googly eyes.  Feel free to add extra eyes to your monster!

Family Day 2016:  Magapalooza: DIY Theatre!

We are proud to present our annual Family Day event on Monday February 15, 2016!  Every year we host a party to celebrate all of the amazing families in Central Alberta.  The theme of this event is different every year but the goal is the same…to spend time together as a family taking part in great activities!

This year we are hosting our very own DIY Theatre.   In conjunction with that theme we are thrilled to be hosting a performance by Treehouse Youth Theatre.  This year the kids theatre company has chosen to bring several Robert Munsch books to life on the stage.  Between performances, there will be lots of activities for the entire family spread throughout the museum. Take part in making your own sock puppet and then try your hand at a performance in our puppet theatre.  Not interested in puppet making?  Try acting out a scene from a children’s story.  Throw on some costumes and take a quick video.  Who knows the next Oscar winner could get their start on the MAG stage!  When you are ready for a break from all the action, recharge with food and drinks. Then head back to the gallery and take a family photo in our photo booth. Once you have captured a fantastic family picture, create your very own frame to commemorate a great day spent together as a family.

WHEN: Monday, February 15, 2016 from 1-4PM.

COST: Free to attend. Suggested Donation of $10/Family.

Our longest running and most successful family program is MAGnificent Saturdays.

MAGnificent Saturdays is a fantastic opportunity to engage the community of Red Deer in the creation of art.  With a diverse array of artists creating art projects, MAG Saturdays offers families a chance to create a work of art that they may not otherwise get to do.  This is a weekly program set in our dedicated creative space, the Stewart Discovery Room where families can work on their projects together with all the supplies they need and no worries about making a huge mess at home.  The weekly art project goes beyond the realm of crafting, that you can do at home, and introduces families to projects they may be intimidated to try on their own or would never have thought of.

There is significant research that tells us about the value of and participating in the arts is necessary for healthy brain development.  The creative process is so fundamental to the development of problem solving, critical thinking, idea generation, perseverance and self-identity.  Opportunities to engage in the creative process are not always easy to find, MAGnificent Saturdays is a perfect place to create, explore, learn and play.

Join our artists Erin, Kirstin, Shannon, Deirdre and a few special guest artists for an afternoon of creative bliss with your family.

WHEN: Saturdays, Drop-In 1-4pm

COST: $5/person or $10/family. Have a MAG Family membership? Your admission to all MAGnificent Saturdays are included with membership!
