Give the gift of safety!

A big part of parenting is passing on your knowledge to your children. This is what helps them develop into young adults. It’s an ongoing process, and along the way you – and they – will encounter what they call ‘life lessons’  — and one of the biggest is to be a safe driver.

But how do you give your kids the proper introduction to the world of driving? Let’s face it, driving is an acquired skill. It’s something that requires professional help. It’s critical that you give your children an accurate, safe learning experience as they venture into the world of driving a motorized vehicle.

kartSTART Presented by Toyota is a unique, ASN Canada FIA Safety Endorsed youth driving program that gives children as young as 10 an initial introduction to driving using go-karts.

Now in its sixth year, kartSTART has helped over 4,000 Canadian youth take their first steps into the world of driving. “Many parents say the same thing when they show up to one of our programs,” says kartSTART’s Russ Bond. “‘I’ve seen them drive on Xbox — they aren’t driving my car. Please help!’”

kartSTART is a family program. The day starts with a safety briefing. Then, the participants are outfitted in all the safety gear: suits, helmets and gloves. Each participant is given one-on-one instruction on the proper, safe operation of a go-kart.  “Our professional instructors take all the time needed to make sure that every youth that gets in one of our karts understands exactly what they are supposed to do to make it go — and more importantly, make it stop,” Bond says.

The participants are then led around the track behind an instructor for the first on-track session. Each participant gets multiple sessions on the track in the karts. “It’s a full morning of learning,” Bond says. “By the end of the second session, parents are amazed to see their kids controlling a motorized vehicle all on their own.”

Once the karting sessions are done, kartSTART provides lunch for all families.

The entire family then has the opportunity to experience the kartSTART safety track with the latest Toyota vehicles. Toyota’s Star Safety Program (six electronic aids built into the cars) and Toyota Safety Sense are on full display as the parents of the participants try the safety track with the kartSTART instructors.

“The youth that visit us have a great time — and they are learning a life skill,” Bond says. “Our goal is for each participant to receive a safe introduction to driving a motorized vehicle on their own. This is the only program of its kind in Canada, and we are really proud of what we have accomplished so far.”

In 2016, kartSTART has 10 national stops across Canada between July 1 and August 30. Registration can be done online, and the program is offered in English and French. Participation is restricted to 20 participants per program.

This summer, give your child the gift of safety with kartSTART.
