Maximum Camping Fun

June 20th, 2014

Many are packing their supplies, stocking up on bug spray, filling the cooler and headed for some time outdoors - the camping season is now in full swing for Albertans!

We've already been a few times, and it's taken those trial and errors to perfect my packing list. This is especially true when it comes to taking kids camping. There's a fine line between being equipped and over packing, and keeping them well occupied yet preventing the complaints of boredom. Happy kids make a happy trip, right?

So, to maximize the family fun and make camping and enjoyed adventure this summer, here's what you should bring {beyond the standard clothes, proper footwear}:

  • Sun Protectant and mosquito spray

  • Snacks, both healthy and some treats. Kids might want to snack often, so be prepared. And yes, definitely pack the s'mores!

  • Deck of cards and a favourite board game

  • Binoculars & a magnifying glass {even ones from the dollar store}

  • Lightweight Fishing Poles, even if they want to just pretend.

  • Comfort item such as a stuffie and a compact bag of small toys like dinky cars. Camping brings out the simple play again!

  • Crayons and a colouring book

  • Ball, small enough to bring and has so many options for play

  • Bug net and bug terrarium from the dollar store - there'll be a lot to catch out there!

  • Bikes, yet if you don't have the room to bring them - what about folding scooters?

When the kids to say those dreaded 'I'm bored' words {‘cause they eventually do!}, I’ve learned that the best solutions are the simplest ones.

Rocks surround our campsite, so the kids choose some and pretend they are cupcakes and cookies - make shift kitchen play with surrounding blades of grass as the salad!

Or, I might suggest they hunt for the best rocks they can find, all kids love treasures! You could bring dollar store paintbrushes and a couple bottles of small latex paint so the kids can paint animals on the rocks. Trust me, hours of play with this one for very little packing and cost.

Don't forget to go on nature walks, play games of I Spy and again, don't forget the s'mores! Just don’t!

Have a fun {and safe} camping season everyone!
