Teen Matters

5th Annual Beautiful ME Event

March 28th, 2016

Submitted by “Plugged In” (Plugged In Community Centre)

The Beautiful ME event is in it’s 5th year and we are accepting nominations for 30 participants to spend a day discovering, exploring and celebrating their very own brand of “Beauty”.

What do we mean by beauty?  Beauty goes much further than the surface.  It is much more than the reflection in the mirror… it is all of you!   We want teens to look beyond societal beauty standards to see that exactly who they are, right now, is perfect, and not something that needs to be fixed or “made over”.  Who you are on the inside and on the outside needs to be celebrated!  We know that to someone on the outside looking in at the event, this statement may seem contradictory as the day includes the opportunity to explore make up, hair styles, fashion and a photo shoot.  It is through these experiences that participants of Beautiful Me can open up and share what makes them feel insecure and get advice and feedback from our experts.  To have someone be invested in YOU, to listen to what YOU want and to support YOU through a day of digging deep to discover that beauty is… strength, beauty is… courage and beauty is… contribution, is a very new experience for many of the participants.

The event has evolved to really provide a serious boost of self-esteem, self-awareness and is an acknowledgement of what teens deal with on a daily basis.  This year we are collaborating with Bellerose Composite High School to offer student volunteers from specialty program areas like cosmetology, digital design, photography and leadership the opportunity for meaningful participation with our volunteer professionals.  Students will see that the volunteer professionals bring far more than talent or a trade to the event. They will see that Beautiful Me is a powerful experience created through a thoughtful and empathetic approach to understanding the obstacles participants may be facing to realizing their own value and beauty.

The nomination process is simple; the event is open to youth 13-19 years of age, you can be nominated by family, friends or teachers, you can nominate yourself or you can nominate a friend. Nomination submissions should be done on line at

BeMe is an event offered by Plugged In Community Centre Organization. Plugged In is a non-profit society based in St. Albert with a goal to establish a facility that would support inclusive recreational, educational and events for all ages.

Donations to the event are also greatly appreciated — this event requires funding every year and your donations help to make THE difference for 30 youth in the community.  To donate, please email
