Every Great Business Has a Great Love Story - Premium Carpet Cleaning

January 21st, 2016

By Cory Pawliuk

Running your own company is no piece of cake and neither is raising a family. Kate and I manage to do both with a mix of resilience, creativity and willpower. A wealth of skills are honed in being a parent that serve well in entrepreneurship like: time management, operating on a budget, multitasking, creativity, and problem-solving to say the least.
Our business story has a little love story to it. I met Kate while working for a carpet cleaning company here in Edmonton. I was a carpet technician while she works in the front office. It was not one of those things that we were both hooked from the moment we saw each other. We kept it business with a little flirting here and there. Then one fine Saturday, after a long day at work, we went out on a date and the rest is history. It was only late 2014 that we decided to start our own company given that we had the experience and the education, and most importantly by doing so it would also give our family more time to spend together.

Company: Premium Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning
How long have you been doing it? Coming on our 1st birthday of operation.

Background: I studied at Grant MacEwan University. I used to do marketing and advertising with music on the side. I was part of a band and I’d play in weddings as well as teach private music lessons. Kate took business administration in college and now puts it in good use in running the company.

What Drove You to Start Premium Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning? Kate and I believed that there is a void in the industry. The old-fashioned ethic of providing quality service, taking time, and paying attention to detail. Owning our own company gives us the flexibility. The ability to set our own schedule, wearing pajamas or even sitting next to our pets or kids while we work. There is also a sense of pride in building something of our own and having a chance to give back to the community whenever we can.

Biggest Plus of Ownership: The opportunity to create a business that is truly aligned with our own value and beliefs. As a sole proprietorship, we are able to make our own decisions about how to best operate day-to-day, which leads to creating a culture and a brand that is uniquely our own.

Biggest Drawback of Ownership: There is always a risk of losing everything we have worked for and we are solely responsible for every decision we make in our business whether good or bad. But we take on the risk and we reap the rewards of our hard work.

Biggest Misconception About Ownership: That we have unlimited freedom. We have to be there, we have to show up when we are needed. There are times where our business gets more attention than our kids and vice versa. We believe though that in the end it all balances out.

Top Source of Inspiration: Look for inspiration everywhere. Make note of all the things that frustrate you in your daily life or listen to your customers. Only recently we’ve started to offer steam cleaning of baby gears due to some moms asking for it. Always innovate.

What’s your vision? Where do you see your business in 5 years? Paint us a picture.

We are currently operating our business out of our home here in Edmonton and we are hoping to have our own little shop. We don’t want to be the biggest carpet and upholstery cleaning company. We want to be known as the best company. A company that provides the greatest cleaning experience possible to the customer. A company that cares about its image and others by giving not just the best clean but the safest and healthiest cleaning as well.

What Makes Premium Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Different? We are the First and Only Wool Safe Approved Service Provider in Central and Northern Alberta. There is no trade secret, only premium quality work and products. We are very transparent with the cleaning solutions we use that we have it all posted in our website. Trust is very important to us and we want people to trust us. Customers have to know that we will take care of their home like it’s ours and that we only use products that are not only eco-friendly but are also hypo-allergenic and non-toxic, have no VOCs or no off-gassing.

Favorite Family Past time: Our family is very simple. After work and school, we all hang out in the kitchen and make dinner together. That’s our favorite part of the day. Just being together, share our stories for the day, and have some play time with our pets. We also like to play board games. I have a great passion for board games that I have created some of my own.

Advice to Entrepreneurs: Be kind to yourself. Have some me time even if it's just to breathe and relax. Entrepreneurship, just like parenthood, is not a 9-5 job. Some days we stay up late working and then have to do an early drop off at school. Some weeks we work after hours then have to do household chores and all parenting stuff. But no matter what, you have to make your family a part of your business. Include your kids in your business and make them a part of the journey. Kate and I always find time to spend with the most important component in our life and the inspiration behind our company – our family.
