What made you decide to start your business?

We had attended all the various activates that Edmonton had to offer for our son and felt there was a gap in the market. We wanted something noncompetitive, something really fun and different with a focus on fitness.  We live in south Edmonton and we had to drive so far for any active as well.

How long was it been between that first thought & opening the doors?

We started to research franchises in 2014. We looked at all franchises in the children’s services industry.  We wanted something that was new to Edmonton, but was a proven business model. My Gym was ranked #1 in its category in the top 500 franchise and with at the time over 300 locations in the world and being in business for over 30 years it was hard for others to compete. We went to California in Feb. 2014 to tour their head office and flag ship locations. In April 2014 we purchased the franchises rights to open My Gym in Edmonton. We started construction at our location in Sept. 2014, John completed their month-long training program in California in Oct. 2014 and we opened our doors January 8, 2015.

What was the first thing you did to put your business out there?

We started a Facebook page, we put decals on our car and we started handing out fliers to parents at parks, grocery stores, really any time we saw someone with children we would give them a flyer.

What makes your business different?

My Gym has developed an extraordinary program and facility devised to help children 6 months thru 10 years of age develop physically, cognitively and emotionally. We have hundreds of locations in more than 30 countries offering structured, age-appropriate, weekly classes that incorporate music, dance, relays, games, special rides, gymnastics, sports and more. Children have loads of fun as they gain strength, balance, coordination, agility and flexibility while developing social skills, confidence, and self-esteem. Our state-of-the-art facility, extensively trained staff, award-winning class programs, and excellent student/teacher ratio have earned My Gym the reputation as the best early learning program of its kind.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced?

Securing a location was very challenging as the rent rates were so high.

Staffing is an ongoing challenge. It is hard to find the right people what have the passion we do for our business.

Did you have anyone help you along the way?

All of our friends and family have helped us market and spread the word about My Gym. From sharing posts on facebook, to having their kids wear My Gym shirts!

What has been a memorable moment along your journey?

We have been so lucky to be able to have time with our kids! They can come to work with us most of the time!  Their joy and love for My Gym is infectious.  When we were setting up, Reid was so excited about each toy and piece of equipment; he wanted to test it all out! He was so excited to show it off to all of his friends during our grand opening! We have made some new lifelong friends, people we would not have met if we did not open My Gym.  When we hear people say “Oh My Gym!  We love it there!!!” is the best feeling!

Has anyone ever said “You should just quit” – what did you say to the naysayers?

Running a business comes with lots of challenges. When we are really struggling with a situation, John and I often say, if we could go back in time, would we still have done this knowing what we know now? And the answer is YES all the time! We love My Gym and all is stands for!!

What’s your vision? Where do you see your business in 5 years? Paint us a picture.

We want My Gym to be a brand that everyone knows about and loves. We want to continue to offer an outstanding program that children and parents love!
