Education Guide

Playing together is perhaps one of the most important things you can do with your child. It is so much more that just having fun. Play is essential to brain development and contributes to children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being. Through active play, children interact with, and learn about the world around them. Play is also important because it involves you. It is an ideal way for parents to fully engage with their child, sharing an important bond while nurturing their development.

No one believes in the power of play more than the current owner of Gymboree Play & Music. Gymboree Edmonton is owned and operated by a mother-daughter duo that got their start at Gymboree Play & Music many years ago, as parent and baby. Lisa is a retired educator, having taught kindergarten and elementary music in the public-school system and teaching private voice and piano lessons. Kristina is a graduate of the Grant MacEwan Theatre Arts program and has appeared in many musical productions and plays throughout the city. They are happy to once again be sharing a special connection and enjoying the benefits of play with all their customers.

Gymboree Play & Music provides opportunities for you and your infant, toddler or preschooler to engage in meaningful play. Their focus is specifically on the early years, from birth to 5 years of age, with classes designed by early childhood experts to nurture your child’s development. Their programs incorporate a balanced, whole-child approach that not only supports what your child is learning right now but also to aspire to what comes next. Classes are designed in six-month increments to meet the group’s unique interests and abilities. Gymboree’s equipment has been specially designed for young children by Jay Beckwith, an internationally respected playground designer with over 40 years’ experience. The bright vinyl pieces and colourful props help create an environment to stimulate your child’s physical, cognitive and social development. The teachers are continually training and learning to deliver the high-quality programming that parents have come to expect at Gymboree.

In addition to Play and Learn gym classes, Gymboree Play & Music also offers classes in Music and Art. The music classes, for children 6 months to 5 years, offer an active approach to musical learning through fun games, singing, movement and instrument exploration. Art classes, for children 18 months to 5 years, offer an opportunity for your child’s creativity to blossom through painting, drawing, sculpting, story time, movement and songs.

For preschool aged children, Gymboree offers programs to help your little one prepare for the classroom setting. Preschool Steps, for 2 to 3 year-olds, introduces independent learning through a fun parent-child class. School Skills, for 3 to 5 year-olds, builds on the key social and intellectual skills needed for school life through language development, art, science exploration, group play and more.

Gymboree Play & Music will also be offering Summer Camp programs for 3 to 5-year-olds. These week-long afternoon camps will be filled with fun while the children explore music, art, science exploration, gym time and, of course, Gymboree’s famous bubbles and parachute games!
